Well it really depends on where you want to use it. The coverage of Thuraya is not Global yet, but thses are the main considerations:
Coverage Thuraya is small and loaded with features Iridium is large but rugged and practical Thuraya uses a Geo-stationary satellite Iridium uses Low Earth Orbit Satellite Thuraya offers push mail and 60kbps data download Iridium data is only 2.4kbps
The call rates are quite similar, but both offer special sim cards for particular countries, mainly africa.
I have used all three - Thuraya is good if you can get hold of one of the old handsets - the new sets have too many features and very poor battery life - they are also not as robust as the old sets. Inmarsat is good particularly on the high seas. Iridium has robust handsets and good coverage. I am moving away from Thuraya to Iridium.
